It almost seems like we were on vacation for a few months. What changes have taken place in our small city!!

As we were driving back into Prishtina yesterday having spent just under a week in Bulgaria with our good friends, we were confronted with a police block on the main road into our part of town. We noticed that yet more roads and buildings had been demolished and more re-routings were being offered. As we had been driving along the main road into town, it struck me that there were a lot of smartly dressed people walking down the side walk, along with a smattering of nuns (a people group I have never seen before in the city). I had already started wondering what was going on. As we got to the center where the police were blocking the main road to our section of town, we saw huge numbers of people pouring out of the newly constructed Mother Teresa Prishtina Catherdral. It stands close to the center, looking very unfinished, yet on Sunday afternoon so vibrant with so many people having celebrated mass at it’s inauguration service. The service coincided with what would have been the 100th birthday of Mother Teresa. Some of our friends said that the sound of the organ echoed throughout our small “bowl shaped” city. I will be interested to see if and how it is used in the coming weeks as we monitor the continued construction work from our bedroom window. It will also be interesting to watch the construction of “Mother Teresa Square” (the plans look beautiful) and see where they decide to put all the traffic as they close more roads!

This week is also the last week of a religious festival here in Kosovo. Thursday is a national holiday as followers end their month of religious activities with a big celebration. We watched some of these traditions last year as we moved into town. This evening our neighbours and friends brought us some Fli (a traditional Kosovar delicacy that is painstakingly prepared for special occasions) and some turkish roasted peppers. We were touched by them sharing with us, and couldnt help but make the connection to us sharing Christmas cookies with them in December

We live in an interesting, ever changing city. It’s fun to observe what is going on around us and gradually become involved in life here in Prishtina!

Today I (Jen) wished that I could have been many miles away in the town of Guymon, OK. This weekend a good friend of ours, Kaci Ronne, died after a 7 month battle with cancer. Today many people gathered to celebrate her life. The Ronne family were volunteers in Albania when we arrived in 2008. They welcomed us and orientated us to the city. Over the year that we spent together they quickly became some of our closest friends in Tirana. Our kids played together often, we worked together on projects such as the church nursery, they helped us move to Kosovo, we celebrated when Kaci became pregnant, we celebrated birthdays and christmas together… we so enjoyed each others company. My heart breaks for Ryan and the kids as they embark on life without their best friend and mom. She will be greatly missed. Her death has impacted us deeply. We question, we have been angry, we are devastated, but amongst all of those emotions we trust that her life had true meaning, that she is in her Makers arms now, healed and restored, and that we must trust in His perfect will. Please join us in praying for them… Ryan, Tate (7), Mya (5) and Jada (8 months) and the rest of her family. May great things come out of this hard time, for them and all who witnessed their story.

Summer is in full swing. In some respects life has slowed down with many believers spending the summer in their family homes. In others it has picked up as we have welcomed volunteers and tentmakers and Doug has taken on the sunday services, tuesday and thursday night meetings as Imir and Janette are on holiday for the month of July. We have hosted (and participated) in a field theology class, hosted EUNC faculty meetings and taken a trip to Albania to visit with believers there as well as get medical check ups. The kids continue to grow and develop. Jonny is at summer camp and enjoying spending the mornings with his friend there. Sarah is starting to talk (and tantrum!) and “The Bean” is so far the most active baby I have carried. At just 20 weeks pregnant I can’t sleep for being kicked at night. Hopefully some of these photos will give you the full picture of our summer so far. Click on the individual thumbnails for full pictures and information.
A few lowlights… snow, SNOW, and more SNOW (canceling several services & get togethers with friends), a broken down car on one of the coldest nights of the year, a very unsettled Jonathan who asks at least twice a week to go home to Kosovo, a car wreck (which Doug escaped from with just whiplash)…
We are surviving, enjoying, thankful for blessings and hopeful for endurance to get through 2 more months of Home assignment.

Our continued prayer is that the enthusiasm, excitment and hope found in the believers of Kosovo will touch folks here and those called to support His people there will get involved!

It occurred to me this morning that I have not been posting regular updates! Life is busy. Life is fun. Life leaves little time for updating our website! However, we know that it is important to let you all know what we are up to. You are the people who support us and encourage us in our work. WIthout you we would not be as productive or as safe! So, I take this opportunity whilst Sarah is happy and playing and Jonny is at preschool to update you on our fall activities.

September saw a myriad of guests pass through our house. The main reason was the 10-year anniversary of the group of believers here. What fun it was to celebrate with so many people who came before us here and worked with our foundation NCM Kosovo to rebuild houses after the war, teach English and other classes and make friendships and relationships. For the believers it was a special time to see old friends and dream new visions of what work we have for the future.

As soon as we had finished the celebrations and said goodbye to all the guests 12 of us jumped into cars and headed to Macedonia for a field conference. It was a wonderful time to connect with old friends from Romania, Bulgaira, Slovina, Albania and the UK.

November saw a trip to Albania for the district assembly. What a special time we had as our first Albanian was ordained during the meetings. It was also a chance for Doug to meet with the Education leaders to talk about his new responsibilities as the Learning center coordinator. We are now in the midst of a class, Introduction to College studies that five of our students are taking. Completing this class will enable them to take classes online from our European Nazarene College and from our Albania/Kosovo Learning Center.

Now we are in the midst of Christmas celebrations. Jen is baking cookies for the neighbourhood as an excuse to knock on doors during this season and further get to know our neighbours. We have celebrations with the believers here in Prishtina to look forward to and in Suhareka. Along with the international ministry community events that we participate in at this time of year. We are also preparing for our home assignment. We will be home for 3 months Jan – March. We are both looking forward to this time with friends and family sharing about work that we are excited about, and a little nervous and “exhausted in advance’ thinking about the travelling with kids and being away from our home routines. We definitely are looking forward to seeing some of you ☺

Just a quick post to say that we have arrived in Kosovo and we are busily trying to set up our cute house in central Prishtine (Photos to follow!). It was quite the monster move. We had a truck come to our house in Tirane on Friday to pack up our belongings. We left on Saturday for Suhareka (a town about 30 minutes across the Albania/Kosovo border) where we stayed the night at a motel. On Sunday we had a van & some friends pack the furniture from an apartment rented by volunteers and drove with it from Suhareka to our house in Prishtine. For the past two days we have been cleaning, moving furniture around and trying to get some order in the house before our shipment arrives, hopefully on Thursday. We are praying it is no later than Thursday as Jen’s parents are coming for the weekend to help us unpack! We will move into our house tomorrow. Up until now we have been staying with Imir and Janette as we have no bed at our place! We will sleep on an air mattress tomorrow night and let Jonathan spend his first night in his big boy bed. He has been able to nap in it over the past few days but he is very eager to test it out over night! The kids have done well over the move, and both seem to like their new room. Jonathan seems very comfortable here in Kosovo and is already making friends with the neighborhood kids! We are really blessed to have two great children.

We have been overwhelmed by the love and support we have felt from the believers here. From the moment we arrived in Kosovo we have been surrounded by people helping us, feeding us, helping us to move furniture, giving us a place to stay, looking after our kids so we can work on the house and even cleaning our 2nd hand refrigerator (thank you Adthe!). We have joined a great family here and we are so excited to work alongside a great group of believers.

May the work here be blessed, may friendships & relationships blossom and may the harvest be plentiful!
