Earthquake Update & Relief Efforts

By admin, 19 August, 2007, No Comment

Our Field Director, Rev. Segundo Rimarachin, took the pictures below yesterday when he traveled to the South to take an initial report of the effect that the earthquake has had on our churches and the communities surrounding them.

He has reported that in Ica the Church and parsonage walls have been destroyed and neither building are safe to enter. The remains will have to be demolished and new buildings constructed. In Pisco, two Nazarene’s were killed. As yet the church building was not constructed in this mission area, however the pastors house was completely destroyed. In Nuevo Ayacucho (in the area of Chincha Alta), the church building is one of the only structures left partially standing and thus providing an area of shelter for the community. People in all three areas are without water, food, electricity, and warm clothing. Segundo reported that government aid is beginning to arrive, but it is insufficient to meet the needs of the effected communities. Segundo, Jamie and Doug will be returning on Tuesday to revisit the sites taking with them food, clothing, medications, water etc. to provide for the people in the communities surrounding the churches. The areas effected by the earthquake are all mission zones for the church and we are eager to provide the pastors with support to reach out to their communities in this great time of need.

Earthquake Update

After a day yesterday of trying to communicate with those that we know in the Southern areas worst hit by the earthquake, we now have some more information.

The earthquake has been registered as an 8.0 that centered in the region (state) of Ica, 90 miles South of Lima on the coast.

We have church buildings, houses and congregations in Ica, Pisco, Chincha Alta and Nuevo Ayacucho. We know from news reports that these areas are without water, power and communications. Relief efforts are in the process of trying to recover injured and bodies from underneath many collapsed buildings. We have heard only from Ica, where the pastor has reported that the church building, the parsonage and 8 of the congregations homes have been completely destroyed. We know that the pastor and his family were not hurt, but 10 people in the community of the church lost their lives and many were injured.

Rev Segundo Rimarachin (Field Director) and Rev Jamie Garcia (District Superintendent – South Central) are traveling down this morning to try and go to as many of the sites that they can. The Pan America highway has been badly damaged so they do not know how far that they will get. They will assess the damage and give some emergency relief. We hope to know more of the areas that have yet to communicate with us by this evening.

Here in Lima we are collecting and organizing clothing and other supplies that will be taken down on the return trip that is scheduled for Monday.

Please pray for the communities of Ica, Pisco, Nuevo Ayacucho and Chincha Alta. And the safety of Segundo & Jamie as they travel on unsafe roads.

We just want to post a quick note to say that we and the people that we know here in Lima are OK. It was a very scary experience however we feel very blessed that we did not experience worse.

Obviously we have churches in the area of Ica where the earthquake was at its strongest. This morning we shall be trying to find out the damage and see what we can do to help. We shall post more information later in the day.

Thank you for the general prayers of protection and health that we know many of you lift up for us daily.
